PhRMA (USA) Signs New Policy Partnership Agreement with Government of Algeria To Develop Innovative Medicines Sector
PhRMA commits to helping Algeria achieve its “Vision 2020” strategy to strengthen the innovative biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry and improve human health San Diego (25 June 2014)
Representative of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Pharmaceutical Products Control Laboratory of Algeria, setting out a new framework for partnership on policies to encourage more innovation, employment and investment in this strategic sector in the Algerian economy, PhRMA announced here today.
In a recent interview at the Algerian Radio, the President of UNOP (National Union of Pharmaceutical Operators), Dr Abdelouahed Kerrar, stated that there are 70 operational pharmaceutical plants in Algeria and 117 new plant projects and investment on the table. This confirms the huge need of equipments and input necessary to follow these projects. The Algerian Pharma Industry is aiming at manufacturing locally 70 % of its needs. It is currently manufacturing 40 % of its needs and importing 60 % of them.
The New Town of Sidi Abdallah conducted Saturday the validation of 42 investment projects in the field of health and the pharmaceutical industry at a ceremony attended by the Minister of Housing , urbanism and city , Abdelmajid Tebboune .
An area of over 52 hectares of the eastern entrance to the city was reserved for these projects out of a total of 148 other destined to become a pole of excellence specializing in the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology.
The realization of these projects is entrusted to private companies and 36 public 6 on the basis of a specification requiring the latter to carry out the actual start of their of their projects within two months later.
The new city may withdraw investors operating land in case of non compliance with the terms of the specifications and deadlines permit. In recent months, six companies have started their activities related to the manufacture of drugs. It is the French company Sanofi Aventis, Jordanian companies MPI Sigmamed , Mid Pharma and Algerian companies " And Pac Remed Pharma.
In the new town of Sidi Abdallah, we completed four projects namely that of Saudi companies El Kendi , Al Dar al Arabiya Jordanian and Algerian Wafa File Ceva and Laval. There is also provided a health center that extends over an area of 34 hectares which will be carried out five projects counting centers and clinics specializing in cardiac , pediatric and cancer surgery.
